The Future Lasts A Long Time is a show about schematic extrapolations of the future; and the handmade. Or, to be more precise: the ‘future’ - metaphor, legion, mythology - as made by hand: Handmade versions of the future. It explores the elliptical facets of the future as a template for utopian idealism and social progression - as something redeemable. But as it does so, the show simultaneously explores the residue of objects and picture making in an age of digital data and electronic signals. Material and manual construction in an era of hi-tech machinery and micro-processors. Rather than pushing painting, drawing and sculpture towards obsolescence, the digital era has given handmade art a new lease of life; more than that, it seems to have made it stronger than ever. In the light of new mediums with which to fabricate, artists seem to have exercised a cautionary vision; sensing a mood as one of context not of discovery or invention. Pressetext
