The landscape painter Martín Rico

At the end of this year the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Meadows Museum in Dallas will be presenting the monographic exhibition The landscape painter Martín Rico (1833-1908). It focuses on one of the most important Spanish painters of the second half of the nineteenth century and a pioneering figure in the introduction of landscape into Spain.

The Museo Nacional del Prado houses the largest and finest collection of works by Martín Rico, notably twelve oil paintings, forty sketchbooks and a recently acquired watercolour album. This extensive group of works makes it possible to present all the different phases within the career of this Madrid-born artist, from his early landscapes of the Sierra of Madrid to his compositions painted in Venice and Paris. The works from the Prado will be shown alongside loans from international public and private collections, particularly from the USA where Martín Rico was particularly celebrated. The exhibition will be structured chronologically and will present all the different periods in the artist’s career through his most important works.

The landscape painter Martín Rico (1833-1908) is part of the Museo del Prado’s ongoing strategy of highlighting and reassessing the work of the leading nineteenth-century Spanish painters. The exhibition will subsequently travel to the Meadows Museum in Dallas, Texas (10 March to 7 July 2013).
