press release

Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party, one of the greatest impressionist paintings ever created, returns home to Washington following a record-breaking four-year tour to seven U.S. cities and exhibitions in Switzerland, Japan, Italy, and France. The Boating Party, along with approximately 60 of the museum’s best-loved paintings and sculpture, will be reinstalled, including major works by some of the most important European artists intimately associated with the development of modernism—Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. These masterworks were shared with a global audience while the museum completed an addition and renovation to further enhance visitors’ experience of art. Highlights of this project include additional galleries, a 180-seat auditorium, an art and technology lab for online resources and programs, an activity room for hands-on art education projects, student exhibition spaces, a new and expanded library, a sculpture courtyard, and a new café.
