The National Gallery in Prague presents an exhibition of one of the founding figures of modern European art – the painter and engraver William Hogarth. The artist cannot go unmentioned in any history of Western art, as he laid the foundations for modern caricature. The main theme of his oeuvre is formed by urban society and its vices, such as alcoholism, crime and punishment, as well as 18th century London – all topics still relevant today. For the first time, the National Gallery in Prague is dedicating an exhibition to Hogarth’s work. The exhibition is accompanied by a monograph which surveys the subsequent influence of Hogarth’s work both in the Czech Lands and abroad.
