The Vincent 2006

For the first time the Stedelijk Museum shows work of the nominated artists for The Vincent Van Gogh Biennial Award for Contemporary Art in Europe.

The jury of The Vincent 2006 has nominated the following five artists:

- Urs Fischer (1973, Zürich, Switzerland) - Andrey Monastyrski (1949, Petsamo, Murmansk) - Dan Perjovschi (1961, Sibiu, Romania) - Wilhelm Sasnal (1972, Tarnow, Poland) - Cerith Wyn Evans (1958, Llanelli, Wales, United Kingdom)

The jury of The Vincent 2006 consists of: Manuel Borja-Villel (director of the MACBA, Barcelona), Ian Dunlop (art historian and consultant, London), Ingvild Goetz (Sammlung Goetz, Munich), Udo Kittelmann (director of the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt), Poul Erik Tøjner (director of Louisiana, Humlebæk), Gijs van Tuyl (chair of The Vincent 2006, director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam).

On December 13 the jury met to select a shortlist of five artists based on the original longlist of 35 candidates from 18 European countries. The jury will meet again in November 2006 to award one of the five artists the prize of € 50,000.

The work of the current selection of candidates is marked by great diversity; spanning disciplines, generations and locations, it ranges from painting to installation, and from London to Moscow. Contrary to the previous three editions, The Vincent no longer maintains an age limit. Now, both emerging artists and those who are more established but have yet to gain the public recognition they deserve, are able to participate. One of the most important aspects for the judges is the expectation that the work of the nominated artists will have significant, enduring impact on contemporary art.

The Broere Charitable Foundation established ‘The Vincent’ (The Vincent Van Gogh Biennial Award for Contemporary Art in Europe) in memory of Monique Zajfen, a good friend of the Broere family and former owner of Galerie 121 in Antwerp. Her involvement with and passion for contemporary art will once more be an incentive for directing attention to talented young artists from Europe. The prize has a secondary goal of encouraging communication in a free, united and peaceful Europe.

Linked to The Vincent is the Monique Zajfen Collection, a collection that the Broere Charitable Foundation is assembling in cooperation with the Stedelijk Museum and that will be placed with the Museum on long-term loan. The foundation of the Monique Zajfen Collection will consist of the acquisition of works by the previous winners (successively the Finnish video artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila, the German painter Neo Rauch and the Polish artist Pawel Althamer) and will be further expanded with substantial purchases from future prize winners.
