press release

Thinking of the Outside is an exhibition of new art works presented in unusual sites across Bristol city centre. The invited artists, Nathan Coley, Phil Collins, Kathleen Herbert, Susan Hiller, Silke Otto-Knapp and João Penalva, began research with Bristol’s historical landscape such as the remains of the city’s medieval gates and walls. Their ideas have developed to examine broader ideas of belonging and location. Featuring moving image installations, painting, sculpture and live events, Thinking of the Outside offers an intriguing route through the inside of the city, exploring the relationships between insider and outsider.

Thinking of the Outside is commissioned by Bristol Legible City and Picture This in association with Situations at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Education programme supported by Arnolfini.
