press release

This exhibition presents an overview of the German photographer Thomas Demand’s recent work and comprises some 23 large-scale photographic works. It also includes a film-work and a specially commissioned architectural installation for IMMA.

The intriguing title of the exhibition ‘L’Esprit d’Escalier’ derives from the French phrase which, although not directly translatable, roughly means ‘wit of the staircase’ and refers to the regret one feels after missing an opportunity to deliver a witty comeback or parting shot.

The exhibition is curated by Rachael Thomas, Senior Curator: Head of Exhibitions, IMMA.

The exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour publication and will include an essay by Ulrich Baer, Professor of German and Comparative Literature, New York University, and newly commissioned texts by writers Dave Eggers, David Foster Wallace and Caoimhín MacGiolla Léith. It will also include a text by Rachael Thomas along with a foreword by Enrique Juncosa, Director, IMMA.
