Tina Modotti & Edward Weston

Photographs from early twentieth century Mexico, by Tina Modotti and Edward Weston, two key figures of Mexican Modernist photography. In cooperation with Hordaland International Art Gallery.

Professional collaborators and lovers, Modotti and Weston worked together in post-revolutionary Mexico during the 1920s, producing an extraordinary range of photographs. This exhibition shows their contrasting response to what has been called ‘The Mexican Renaissance’.

Fascinated by the natural beauty and ancient monuments of Mexico, Weston explored their abstract shapes revealed by the piercing Mexican light. Modotti’s style evolved from Weston’s aesthetic principle. However, moved by the people she met and political belief, she began to use the camera as a tool for social comment.

Beautiful and compelling, this exhibition is a unique chance to see the work of two outstanding photographers of the twentieth century.
