Tjorg Douglas Beer

PATRICIA LOW CONTEMPORARY is delighted to present Mindmaking, a solo exhibition by Tjorg Douglas Beer.

For his explosive solo show in Switzerland, Beer has produced about 20 new works, installations, paintings, collages in a variety of media and on different supports. Such techniques allow Beer to sift through the debris of contemporary society selecting bits and fragments and rearrange them into an alternate dimension. Each work is a snapshot from inside the artist’s brain and his personal relationship to the world today.

In Beer’s dichotomous world, opposing forces reign supreme: Acceptance/Rejection, Change/Status Quo, Birth/Death… This incessant polarization builds up towards a sense of frustration morphing into tension. We are thus faced with a blitz of primal aggression, not unlike our world today. Certain themes are just unavoidable…

It is not about utopian calls to improvement, because the last battle for the good or bad has long been fought and lost. An art that is political, decorative, or neurotic or mystifying or whatever, is whatever […] To open up holes in which we can sink to sink in and to deal there with the world as it could be, is much more interesting.

Tjorg Douglas Beer was born in 1973 in Lübeck, Germany. He studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. During that time, he founded the Ausstellungsraum Taubenstrasse 13, a project space showing the work of his contemporaries; as well as the Sammlung Taubenstrasse, which includes works of Jonathan Meese, Markus Selg and John Bock.

Recently, he has had a solo exhibition at the Kunsthaus Hamburg, and has exhibited at galleries and art centers in the U.S., Europe and Japan, including Space Other, Boston; the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, Japan; the Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, Denmark; the Kunstraum Walcheturm, Zurich, and the Kunstverein, Hamburg.
