TONSPUR 22: Davide Balula

With sounds sampled from the acoustic signals used by the visually handicapped people at pelican crossings every day, »The Endless Pace« is a tunnel, a physical space that marks time, an invisible and abstract clock for passers-by. It can be used as a watch if you wait for the moment when it shows the position of the absent ‘hands’ in the non-visible space it defines. Let's share a quick stroll through the mechanics of time.

Etwas fehlte noch im Wiener MuseumsQuartier: eine Uhr. q21-Artist-in-Residence, Davide Balula (*1978 in Annecy/F), in Paris lebender bildender Künstler und Musiker mit portugiesischen Wurzeln, hat eine solche nun, mit Unterstützung von Norbert Math und Peter Szely (Programmierung), in Form eines 12-Stunden-Echtzeit-Loops für die TONSPUR_passage realisiert. »The Endless Pace« genannt, wird die, aus Geräuschen sogenannter »Pelicon crossings« (kurz für PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled crossing) für Sehbehinderte an Verkehrsampeln komponierte TONSPUR 22 für einen öffentlichen raum, den langen Herbst und Winter über unaufhaltsam die verrinnende Zeit hörbar machen. Die sich dabei über die acht Kanäle der Tonanlage bewegenden Sounds, werden darüber hinaus in ihrer Bewegung dem Lauf imaginärer Uhrzeiger folgen und so Zeit und Raum in Einklang bringen. Erlebbar wird eine faszinierende, ob Ihrer Abstraktion wegen überaus interessante Vertonung von Zeit, in Realzeit.

What the Wiener MuseumsQuartier lacked was a clock. Accordingly, q21 artist in residence has now completed one for the TONSPUR_passage: the French, Paris-based artist and musician with Portugese roots, Davide Balula (*1978 in Annecy/F). The timepiece adopts the form of a 12-hour realtime loop and was completed with the support of Norbert Math and Peter Szely (programming). Called The Endless Pace, the sounds emitted for the visually challenged at pelican crossings (from PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled) are to make the inexorable progress of time audible throughout the long winter. The sounds are fed through the eight channels of the sound system, following the progress of imaginary clock hands and harmonising time with the space. The result is a fascinating and interestingly abstract temporal arrangement, an experience in realtime.
