press release

2•0•0•2 is an exhibition about hidden tensions and broken symmetries. Bringing together some of the most iconic pieces from THE DAKIS JOANNOU COLLECTION 2•0•0•2 describes a state of confusion - the instant preceding a sudden collapse of logic and order. Rather than a group-show, 2•0•0•2 is thought of as a mental space: it outlines an atmosphere of uneasiness a destabilizing experience of dark shadows and possible dramas - just like a film-still charged with a sense of latent violence. Juxtaposing MAURIZIO CATTELAN’S helpless policemen, RINEKE DIJKSTRA’S wasted youth, GREGOR SCHNEIDER’S psychotic ruins and TOM SACHS’ fragile constructions, 2•0•0•2 captures a suspended moment of anxiety, that resonates as a metaphor of today's art and life.

1 + 1 = 1 is both an appendix to 2•0•0•2 and its mirrored, distorted image. Presenting for the first time in Europe KUTLUG ATAMAN’S homonymous video, 1 + 1 = 1 is another exploration of duality and uncertainty. Ataman's piece narrates the story of a Cypriot woman split between two different personalities, cultures and nations: her schizophrenic confession reflects the complexity of history and the ambiguity of our present. Both 2•0•0•2 and 1 + 1 = 1 open at the Deste Foundation on December 20th 2002 and will run until the end of April 2003.
