press release

Uncertain States of America, an exhibition assembled by world famous European curators Daniel Birnbaum, Gunnar B. Kvaran and Hans Ulrich Obrist, presents works by over forty young American artists whose work already determines, or will soon do so, the nature of contemporary art in the United States. Lacking a central theme, the exhibition strives instead to reflect the diversity of stances, conventions and concepts that manifest themselves in the work of these artists, most of whom were born after 1970. While aesthetically innovative, the works on view explore a variety of contemporary American problems while manifesting social and political involvement as well as an awareness of the historical context within which they were created.

The participating artists frequently reference American conceptualist and Pop Art tradition while also employing strategies developed within the post-modern realm. Some of the featured pieces are interactive and thus ultimately shaped in relation to local contexts and through the involvement of local communities.

The exhibition toured throughout 2006, traveling to the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, Bard College in New York and the Serpentine Gallery in London.
