Vincent van Gogh, Self-portrait as a painter (1887-1888), Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)Once refurbishment of the Van Gogh Museum has been completed, many of Van Gogh's outstanding works will be brought together in a special exhibition, to mark the conclusion of eight years’ research into the artist’s methods and the 160th anniversary of his birth. So this momentous anniversary show will provide an exceptionally fine overview of Van Gogh’s multi-faceted oeuvre.

Anniversary exhibition For more than a century people all over the world have been fascinated by the life and work of Vincent van Gogh. The anniversary exhibition Van Gogh at work will show how, in just ten years, Van Gogh developed into a unique artist with an impressive body of work. The exhibition is the culmination of a long-term research project into the artist’s methods, Van Gogh’s studio practice.

Multi-disciplinary research From 2005 a multi-disciplinary research team, working closely with the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and Partner in Science Shell Nederland, has intensively studied the art historical and technical-scientific aspects of Van Gogh’s work. The results are of great value for our knowledge about the painter and are presented in this exhibition.

Insights into Van Gogh's creation process Over 200 paintings, works on paper, sketchbooks and letters by Van Gogh and other artists – supplemented by 19th-century painting materials and artists’ manuals – offer insights into the fascinating creation process behind Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings.
