press release

We’ve Got Mail II is a part of MOSTYN’s History Series of exhibitions, which explore the history and heritage of the gallery’s impressive building, originally built in 1902 and extended in 2010. This new exhibition refers to part of the gallery’s former use as a Royal Mail sorting office.

We’ve Got Mail I (MOSTYN, 2104) presented a history of the Royal Mail through artefacts, documentation and ephemera together with artworks by contemporary artists whose work references the postal mail. This second exhibition of four primarily focuses on the postcard and explores the town of Llandudno as a seaside resort.

We’ve Got Mail II (MOSTYN, 2014) explores the seaside postcard and related local histories. Spotlight sections feature Llandudno families with long traditions in the seaside business, including Punch & Judy, donkeys on the beach and theatrical entertainment. Each subject is explored through the presentation of postcards, text and objects. Also shown will be a number of classic examples of the postcard in the visual arts with works by Carl Andre, Daniel Buren, Sophie Calle, Robert Filliou, Richard Hamilton and Lawrence Weiner.

A catalogue accompanies the exhibition and features texts by the exhibition’s curator Adam Carr (Visual Arts Programme Curator), Alfredo Cramerotti (Director of MOSTYN) and Jane Matthews (Co-curator and History Researcher).
