press release

A retrospective originated by the Haggerty Museum of Art, the exhibition features over sixty works by the Cuban-born artist from major museums, galleries and private collections across the United States and the Caribbean. The exhibition will inform the public of the importance of Lam’s role as an artist and provide an overall appreciation of his world-wide contributions to twentieth-century art. By focusing on Lam in North American collections, this exhibition will fill an important gap in scholarship on the artist. The exhibition catalogue will draw on the expertise of five scholars on disparate aspects of Lam’s life and work in relation to the overall exhibition theme.

After opening at the Haggerty Museum of Art, this exhibition will travel to the Miami Art Museum, The Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, California and the Salvador Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida.

Opening Talk: Wifredo Lam and the New York Art Scene by Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, Adjunct Curator, The Studio Museum in Harlem and Visiting Professor, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and Hunter College. Thursday, October 11, 2007, 6-7 pm at the museum, reception 7-8 pm.
