To celebrate the memorable fact that Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) was born a 100 years ago in Rotterdam, the Kunsthal presents a major retrospective of this painter in his native town. The exhibition will present more than 35 works, spanning his working career; include major loans from the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In addition to his famous women-series, the exhibition focuses on the relationship between the abstract and the figurative and De Kooning’s influence on younger artists such as Gerhard Richter, Brice Marden and David Reed. The exhibition is a collaborative venture with the Kunstforum Wien and the Willem de Kooning Foundation in New York.
