press release

Alexander and Bonin is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Willie Cole. The exhibition will include both free-standing sculpture and scorched wood wall pieces.

Willie Cole has recently completed a residency at the Kohler Company in Sheboygan, WI where he was able to expand his range of materials to include ceramic and iron and avail himself of a wide range of plumbing fixtures. Among the works to be shown is a 17 part herd of cows made of glazed porcelain installed on a field of artificial grass and a group of figures constructed from ceramic basins and chrome plumbing parts. The exhibition also includes two large scale works scorched with branding irons and a pair of 4 x 3 foot cast iron guns.

Willie Cole was born in Somerville and continues to live in New Jersey. He studied at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York. He has recently shown two installation works in a one-person show at the Miami Art Museum and, in 1998, was the subject of individual exhibitions at the Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In June 2000 his work will be shown in the Biennale of Lyon.
