press release

Wojciech Gilewicz's exhibition Studio/Pracownia combines, in a new format, a gallery presentation of contemporary art with innovative educational techniques. The project carried out in Krakow's Bunkier Sztuki Gallery is a continuation and extension of the exhibition Sale/Wyprzedaż shown at the BWA Awangarda Gallery in Wrocław, Poland in April 2011.

Gilewicz draws on the insights of the Wrocław project. There is a constant transformation within the exhibition space. The project will present paintings, video projections and works created as the exhibition unfolds. The constant presence of the artist himself in the exhibition space will provide the visitors with direct contact with the artist, enable them to take an active part in the creative process, to deepen their perception and reflect on the contemporary art scene. Throughout the whole duration of the exhibition Wojciech Gilewicz exposes his canvases and himself to the visitors testing the stereotypes surrounding the figure of the painter, the painter's studio and artistic production as well as the display of the work. In addition to the work created during the exhibition, the latest paintings from the series New Paintings, and videos including In Practice (2009), Bat Yam (2009) and Iwano-Frankiwsk (2007), will be on display along with pieces that show other aspects of Gilewicz's body of work.

The audience will have additional opportunities to engage in this "close encounter with art." The exhibition will dovetail with an extensive educational program, posing questions about the interpretation of contemporary art, and particularly painting. Workshops for children and teenagers are also planned, meetings with the artist tailor-made for students, and a number of educational publications will be issued—handy contemporary art "crib sheets" for children, young people, and teachers who may wish to broaden their knowledge about the most recent currents in art. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a catalogue focusing on the Krakow exhibition, yet giving also the background of the Wrocław version, including an innovative educational DVD (in Polish with English subtitles) produced by pleple.tv during the Wrocław Sale show:

The Studio exhibition catalogue will be published both in Polish and in English, with texts by: Marco Antonioni (NURTUREart Non-Profit, Inc., New York), Jarosław Lubiak (Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź), Anna Markowska (University of Wrocław), Beata Nowacka-Kardzis (Bunkier Sztuki Gallery, Krakow), Piotr Stasiowski (Wrocław Contemporary Museum) and Karolina Vyšata (Bunkier Sztuki Gallery, Krakow).
