press release

In his new installation Berkowski brings along his own architecture, leaving the walls virtually untouched, reducing the gallery to a mere shell, a parenthesis to his most literary installation to date.

Known for his drawings resembling icons or logos, Berkowski uses diagrams as a language, a tool to record and analyze while staying independent of its subject matter. In his exhibitions the artist employs displays to provide a specific way to ‘read’ the drawings in creating a defined succession in time and space and thus making the relation between the drawings the (now) accessible content of the work.

In An Airplane Show / Submarine Show Berkowski transferes a diagram into a floorplan, the lines becoming walls and screens, carrying linear neon formations and large black and white prints based on found photos with superimposed drawings. The playful tone of the photos with their overlay of cartoonish scribbles, which alter the content of the underlying image, is counterbalanced by the rigorous and at the same time fragile neon écritures shown in a interior room.

The viewer finds himself in constant motion through a maze of appearing and disappearing relationships, thus forming his own mental map, his own diagram through his exploration of the installation.

Born in Germany, Wolfgang Berkowski lives and works in Rome.
