press release

Adam Baumgold Gallery presents the exhibition "Word Works" from June 19 through August 8. The exhibition will include paintings, drawings, sculpture, and prints by 27 artists for whom words or text is a significant element in their work. The artists included in "Word Works" are: Joe Amrhein, Alice Attie, Robert Barry, Chris Beas, Marc Bell, Adam Dant, Leslie Dill, Marcel Dzama, Jacob El Hanani, Lee Etheredge IV, Jules Feiffer, Claudia Hart, Jenny Holzer, Lisa Krivacka, Jane Laudi, Ruth Marten, Robbin Murphy, Erik Parker, Kay Rosen, Ed Ruscha, Christian Schumann, Robbin Ami Silverberg, Saul Steinberg, Scott Teplin, Chris Ware, Wayne White, Christopher Wool, Ray Yoshida, and Reed Anderson & Jeff Scharf.

Some works included in the exhibition are Saul Steinberg's "Document," 1972, a drawing depicting Steinberg's emblematic "fake" calligraphic style that approximates words and letters; Ed Rusha's "Brews" from 1970, with its beer bubble-like letters and colors; Jenny Holzer's phrases like "Abusive Power Comes As No Surprise," on an LED sign in "Selections from Truisms," 1992; Lee Etheredge IV's rhythmic geometric patterns of letters formed by a typewriter; Adam Dant's faux book jackets and fictional museums executed in a variety of hand-drawn typefaces; Alice Attie's obsessive, miniature calligraphy in rewriting the entire text of Franz Kafka's story "The Burrow," on a 22" x 30" sheet of paper; Joe Amrhein's sign-like paintings on mylar that barely reveal dense phrases from Artforum magazine; Chris Wool's alkyd on paper work "Fear," 1989, divided on two lines in his distinctive, stencil-like thick letters; Wayne White's candy-colored, run-on, comic word paintings that are overlayed on thrift store lithographs and paintings, as in "LUVHURTZ," 2002; Ray Yoshida's heiroglyphic-like rows of collaged, comic book phrases and unrelated comic, abstract shapes as in "AAAAGH!," 1999; and Scott Teplin's ink and watercolor "Butter," 2003, where words and images are integrated with a witty, seamless authority.
