Young Artists Biennial 2005

The artists and artist couple of Small Heaven are Maija Blåfield, Mikko Kallio, Tellervo Kalleinen & Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, Jouko Korkeasaari, Markus Kåhre, Marko Lampisuo, Vappu Rossi, Jani Ruscica, Tommi Toija and Camilla Vuorenmaa. According to Henna Paunu, curator of the exhibition, the show "stresses our ability to understand and feel compassion, and brings out the personal and the private in relation to something greater. The artists make visible inner worlds, paradises of the mind and utopias. Small Heaven also creates a continuum with the tradition of romantic and idealistic art: the works in the exhibition share high aspirations, the need to dream and create worlds, to let go and sublimate. The exhibition tells about the will to experience, feel, survive and make dreams come true."

The Young Artists' Biennial is an exhibition concept of the Finnish Art Society and is now produced for the second time. The show has a new curator each time. The curator selects a topical theme for the show as well as ten Finnish artists or groups of artists under 35, who bring new work to the Kunsthalle. The Art Society gives a grant of 5,000 € to the artists in the exhibition.

An exhibition paper will be published in conjunction with the show, with an article by Henna Paunu on the themes of the exhibition and interviews with the artists. The schedule of the wraparound programme is on the reverse side of this release. The exhibition paper is distributed free to visitors at the Kunsthalle. Graphic design of Small Heaven is by Syrup Helsinki.

In addition to Henna Paunu, the exhibition team includes Tero Laaksonen, Tuomas Laatikainen, Saara Suojoki, Maija Tanninen-Mattila and Taru Tappola.

at 11-13 Visit by the Drawing Society of Turku Free your pencil! The Drawing Society of Turku will unleash the drawing frenzy of the group members and the audience. The Society members include Matti Vainio, Eero Merimaa, Sami Leppänen, Jani Kaunisto, Jan Lindgren, Joona Huotari and Juha Welling.

at 13.30-15.30 Revolution by Lifestyle - Utopian communities in Australia Is it possible to really live in a Utopia? Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen will read the May Manifesto of the Aquarius Festival from 1973, and tell about their visit to Australian communities. The programme will also include a screening of the film Nearly Normal Nimbin (60min, dir. Paul and Jeni Tait, Australia) and an interview with Bill Metcalf, an expert in community studies. The programme is in English.

at 16 Utu and Lord of the Rings The performance group Utu present a visualisation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The group selected 16 core activities from the book - such as wandering, talking, eating or fighting - and each was turned into a very short videotaped performance. Combining the scenes along the lines of the dramaturgy of the book resulted in a 16-minute silent film. The film is accompanied by a live performance by the Utu Band, who play music and make sounds that match the metric structure of the film. The performance group/rock band Utu is Teppo Jäntti, Marko Lampisuo, Pasi Pohjanperä and Rani Salminen.

at 17 The Tiki Forever! club will transport the Kunsthalle to the Pacific Ocean on the wings of Hawaii theme music and rum drinks. A Tikilounge will be open all day. Come and relax in an exotic atmosphere! The club is organised by Katariina Laine and Camilla Vuorenmaa.

from 20- Restaurant Taidehallin klubi, bar Witch Broom Club will present partly improvised music and drawing. A DJ provides an electronic beat, with the guitar and keyboard players improvising. The draftsperson will make drawings based on the sounds interactively, so that musicians and the draftsperson can respond to the music played by the DJ, to the audience and each other. The music combines dark industrial sounds with motifs from progressive rock. DJ Keke; Jyrki Laiho (Stalwart, Hot Guitars), guitar; Pasi Salmi (Magyar Posse), keyboards; Vappu Rossi, drawing implements on paper.
