What is Arte Povera? Although the term translates literally from Italian as “poor art,” Arte Povera was coined by critic Germano Celant to describe an influential artistic movement that began in Italy in the 1960s. Arte Povera artists largely abandoned painting to redefine the status of sculpture, their work characterized by the use of readily found objects, including wax, mirrors, lead, newspaper, vegetation, neon, and fabric. Zero to Infinity: Arte Povera 1962-1972 features 128 works by 14 artists: Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Piero Gilardi, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Emilio Prini, and Gilberto Zorio.
