press release

A small piece of embroidery presenting the letters VEINS gives the title of Zon Itoxs first solo exhibition at Konrad Fischer Galerie in Europe. Ito (*1972) has received much attention ever since his first show at Kodama Gallery in Osaka. Participations in group shows like „Beautiful Life" at the Art Tower Mito, Tokyo 2001 as well as the Yokohama Trienniale 2001 followed. Lately his work has been showed at the Walker Art Centre, „How Latitudes Become Forms: Art in a Global Age 2003. Embroideries in huge formats are his preferred medium, which has been avoided in the past centuries up to contemporary art practices as it is considered of being pure decorative. The slow acquirement of the line by the time consuming technique of embroidery produces an alienated and broken image. Fragments of landscapes and animals appear in a scenery where neither reality nor logic systems rule. Associations of daydreams are raised in the viewerxs eye. Ito is interested in the relation between what is presented and its meaning, so to speak in the terms of semiotics: the relation between the signifier and the significant. He wants to undergo this relation and to point out the spheres, which lie in between. „As we grow up, we start making distinctions between things. So the adult may need extra effort to get rid of the already existing identifying system x I am trying to express the unexpressed! This working process can also be observed in his books and animated films. A selection of large embroideries from the last years as well as the film „Children of Veins in collaboration with Ryoko Aoki will be presented. Pressetext
