James McNeill Whistler (James Abbott McNeill Whistler, b. 1834, Lowell / Massachusetts, d. 1903, London) was a painter and graphic artist. He was friends with Gustave Courbet and Henri Fantin-Latour - they called themselves 'Société des Trois'. Important works are 'At The Piano' 1859 and 'Symphony in White, no. 1: The White Girl, 1862.
