Frieze Projects is the annual curatorial programme presented at Frieze Art Fair. It comprises installation and site specific interventions, film, performance, debate and conversation through Frieze Commissions, Frieze Talks and The Cartier Award.

Frieze Projects is curated by Polly Staple and presented in association with Cartier.

- Frieze Commissions is a high profile opportunity for artists to present new works in and around the fair. The 2006 commissions include works from Lara Almarcegui, Manon de Boer, Pablo Bronstein, Miguel Calderón, Bonnie Camplin, Phil Collins, Loris Gréaud, Mike Nelson, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

The collaborating institutions in 2006 are Platform Garanti, Istanbul and Project Arts Centre, Dublin. A daily film programme in The Artists Cinema, presented in partnership with LUX, premiers 35mm artists’ film commissions alongside works selected by guest curators.

- Frieze Talks complements the commissions programme, featuring leading art world figures in keynote lectures, conversation and debate. Addressing the prevailing issues in criticism, curating and art production, Frieze Talks take place daily on site in the Guardian Auditorium.

The first recipient of The Cartier Award, Mika Rottenberg, will complete a three month residency and present a new commission at the fair. Cartier's long involvement with contemporary art, primarily through the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris, makes them the ideal partner for this innovative series of commissions.

- Frieze Projects is supported by Arts Council England, and Culture 2000 programme of the European Union (2005-07), in association with International Studio Programme in Sweden, Stockholm; Stedlijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam; Project Arts Centre, Dublin and Platform Garanti, Istanbul. Frieze Projects: Artists Commissions and Talks 2003-2005, a new book that records the artworks produced at the fair over the past three years, will celebrate all past Frieze Projects artists from Paola Pivi to Martha Rosler. Published with edited transcripts of three years of Frieze Talks, the book will be launched at this year’s fair and will be available from all good bookshops world-wide from October. Further details of Frieze Projects will be announced in September.

// Frieze Commissions

Site - specific projects Four new site-specific projects will take the architectural dynamic of the fair itself as their subject, exploring ideas of visibility and invisibility in this spectacular context. Works will include a major on-site installation by Mike Nelson, a structural analysis by Lara Almarcegui, an off-site architectural tour of London led by Pablo Bronstein, and an exhibition of nano sculptures by Loris Gréaud.

/ Mike Nelson Mike Nelson (b. 1967) is a British artist based in London. Nelson has a prolific history of international exhibitions; recent solo exhibitions include ‘Amnesiac Shrine or Double Coop Displacement’, Matt’s Gallery, London (2006), ‘After Kerouac’, Centre d’Art Santa Monica, Barcelona (2006), ‘Studio apparatus for MAMCO’, MAMCO, Geneva (2005) and ‘Triple Bluff Canyon’, Modern Art Oxford (2004). Nelson has presented major installations at the Sao Paolo Biennale, Brazil (2004), at the 8th International Istanbul Biennial (2003) and at the Venice Biennale (2001). Forthcoming solo projects include ACCA Melbourne (2006) and Creative Time, New York (2007). Nelson was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001.

/ Lara Almarcegui Lara Almarcegui (b. 1972) is a Spanish artist based in Rotterdam. Almarcegui has had solo exhibitions at FRAC Bourgogne, Dijon (2004) and at INDEX, Stockholm (2003). She was included in ‘The International’ at Liverpool Biennial (2004) and in ‘Public Act’, Kunsthalle, Lund and ‘Project Rotterdam’, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (both 2005). Almarcegui will participate in Momentum Biennial of Nordic Art, Moss and the forthcoming Sao Paolo Biennale (both 2006) and she will have solo shows in 2006 at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam and Museum Contemporary Art Málaga. This will be Almarcegui’s first exhibition in the UK.

/ Pablo Bronstein Pablo Bronstein (b. 1977) is a British artist living and working in London. Recent group shows include Tate Triennial, Tate Britain (2006), Beck’s Futures and ‘London In Six Easy Steps’ both at ICA, London (2005). Forthcoming projects include ‘Bunch Alliance and Dissolve’, Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati (2006), the Kunstzeitraum residency in Munich (2006-7), and the creation of new farm buildings for Grizedale Arts (2006-7).

/ Loris Gréaud Loris Gréaud (b. 1979) is a French artist based in Paris. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Devils Tower, Prix Paul Ricard 2005’, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2006) and ‘Silence goes more quickly when played backwards (2005)’, culminating in a performance and publication ‘End Extend’ (2006), all at Le Plateau, Frac Ile de France, Paris (2005). Recent group shows include ‘Notre Histoire’, Palais de Tokyo, Paris and ‘Space Boomerang’, Swiss Institute, New York (both 2006) and Paris-London: Le Voyage Interieur, Espace Electra, Paris and the Baltic Triennale, Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius (both 2005). In 2005 Gréaud was awarded the Ricard S.A. Award for the most innovative artist under 40 years in France. This Frieze Projects commission will be Gréaud’s first major public work in the UK.

// 35mm Film Commissions A major collaboration between Frieze Projects and LUX will commission 35mm artists’ films to be premiered at the fair. These films will be screened twice daily at the fair in the Artists Cinema. These commissions will subsequently tour cinemas around the UK, showing before main features, through the Independent Cinema Office.

/ Manon de Boer Manon de Boer (b. 1966) is a Dutch artist based in Brussels. Recent group exhibitions include ‘Don Quiote’, Witte de With, Rotterdam, (2006), ‘Documentary Creations’, Kunst Museum, Luzern (2005) and ‘Nederland niet Nederland’, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2004). De Boer’s film Sylvia Kristel – Paris (2003) has been screened in numerous international film festivals since 2003, (including Hong Kong, Rotterdam, Buenos Aires and Montreal). De Boer’s film Resonating Surfaces (2005) has been included in the International Film Festival, Rotterdam and is in the prestigious International Competition FID (Festival Internationale Documentaire), Marseille (2006) She was previously awarded the Prix Georges de Beauregard at Marseille in 2004. This Frieze Projects/LUX commission will be de Boer’s first 35mm film production.

/ Miguel Calderón Miguel Calderón (b. 1971) is a Mexican artist based in Mexico City. Calderón has a prolific history of exhibitions and projects, participating in the seminal survey exhibition ‘Ultra Baroque: Aspects of Post Latin American Art’ which toured multiple museum venues in the USA during 2001. Recent group exhibitions include ‘In the Air: Projections of Mexico’, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and ‘Prometer no empobrece: arte contemporáneo mexicano’, Reina Sofía National Art Museum, Madrid (both 2005). Calderón has recently shown in the Yokohama Triennale, Japan (2005), the Sharjah Biennale, United Arab Emirates (2005) and the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil (2004). Calderón has shown his videos in numerous film festivals and has also directed music videos and was the lead singer in the bands Mazinger Z and Intestino Grueso. In 1994 he established the artist-run space La Panadería, Mexico City. Forthcoming projects include the Busan Biennale (2006). This Projects/LUX commission will be Calderón’s first 35mm film production.

/ Bonnie Camplin Bonnie Camplin (b. 1970) is a British artist based in London. Recent exhibitions include ‘A Meeting at Conway Hall’, Conway Hall, commissioned by Book Works, London (2004) and ‘The Best Book About Pessimism I Ever Read’ Kuntsverein, Braunschweig (2002). Camplin is a member of the group Donateller with Mark Leckey and Ed Laliq and has recently released a solo LP of her experimental music Heavy Epic LP featured in Dan Fox’s end of year round up ‘Music 2005’, frieze. Camplin is currently collaborating on a short film with Paulina Olowska to be shown at Weils Contemporary Art Center, Brussels. This Frieze Projects/LUX commission will be Camplin’s first 35mm film production.

/ Phil Collins Phil Collins (b.1970) is an artist currently based in Glasgow. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘they shoot horses’, Tate Britain, London (2006–7), Neue Kunsthalle St. Gallen, St. Gallen and ‘the return of the real’, Sala Rekalde, Bilbao (both 2006) and ‘yeah….. you, baby you’, Milton Keynes Gallery, (2005). Recent group shows include British Art Show 6, touring venues UK (2005-6), and the Istanbul Biennial, ‘Universal Experience: Art, Life and the Tourist’s Eye’, Hayward Gallery, London & Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and ‘Populism’, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt; Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius (all 2005) Forthcoming solo exhibitions include ‘New Work: Phil Collins’, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2006) and Ausstellungshalle zeitgenössische Kunst’, Münster (2007). Phil Collins has been nominated for the Turner Prize 2006 showing at Tate Britain, London this October.

/ Apichatpong Weerasethakul Apichatpong Weerasethakul (b. 1970) is a Thai artist and filmmaker based in Bangkok. Since Weerasethakul began making films and videos in the early 90s, he has become one of the few filmmakers in Thailand who have worked outside the strict Thai studio system. He is active in promoting experimental and independent films through Kick the Machine, the company he founded in 1999. Feature films include Tropical Malady (2004), Blissfully Yours (2002), The Adventure of Iron Pussy (2003) and Mysterious Object at Noon (2000). Recent group exhibitions include ‘La force de l’art’, Grand Palais, Paris and Cinéma(s), Le Magasin, CNAC, Grenoble (both 2006), The Baltic Triennial, Lithuania (2005) and The Pantagruel Syndrome, T1-Turin Triennial (2005), Taipei Biennial and the Busan Biennial (both 2004), Istanbul Biennial and the Tirana Biennial (both 2001). Weerasethakul has presented his work in numerous international film festivals and has received many awards including the prestigious Prix du Jury at Cannes in 2004 for Tropical Malady and Le Prix Un Certain Regard, also at Cannes in 2002, for Blissfully Yours. In 2005 Weerasethakul was presented with one of the most prestigious awards for Thai visual artists, Silpatorn, from the Thailand’s Ministry of Culture. Weerasethakul is currently working on a new feature, Syndromes and a Century, to be released in November 2006. He is also a producer for the upcoming experimental feature, Heartbreak Pavilion.

// The Artists Cinema

The Artists Cinema is a major initiative by Frieze Projects and LUX, designed to focus on the increasing importance of cinema as a mode of exhibition for contemporary artists. Frieze Projects/LUX film commissions will be shown alongside daily screenings of an invited programme of film and video, selected by specialist film and video artists and curators, and expanded cinema performances in The Artists Cinema. Highlights of the 2005 programme subsequently toured to the Arnolfini, Bristol, FACT Liverpool and Oberhausen Film Festival, Netherlands. The Artists Cinema is co-ordinated by Ian White and supported by Arts Council England.

// Collaborating Partner Institutions

Frieze Projects are working in 2006 with European partner institutions Platform Garanti, Istanbul and Project Arts Centre, Dublin.

Platform Garanti, Istanbul acts as a catalyst for the dissemination, research and practice of contemporary art in that city. At Frieze Art Fair, Platform Garanti will present 'Collecting Point'. The director and curators of Platform Garanti will expand the institutions' library and archive by selectively buying artist books, exhibition catalogues and art periodicals during the art fair week. A ‘Collecting Point’ located in the Frieze Art Fair magazine area will serve as a display area where the bought publications will be presented for reference to visitors. At the end of the fair, the collection will be shipped to Istanbul where it will be made permanently available for public research at Platform.

Project Arts Centre, Dublin is a theatre, live arts and gallery exhibition space founded in 1966. Grant Watson (Curator of Visual Arts at Project) and Sarah Pierce (The Metropolitan Complex) will co-curate a series of radio programmes in collaboration with Ed Baxter (Resonance104.4fm) that will be broadcast across London from the Resonance stand at Frieze Art Fair, daily between 11am and 12pm. These programmes will take 'communism' as their linking theme and will include conversations, interviews and group discussion with artists, theorists, film makers and activists as well as visitors attending the fair, tapping into the 'surplus economies' of this event as a meeting place for people from around the world.

// Resonance 104.4fm

Resonance 104.4fm will be setting up their radio station and broadcasting live from Frieze Art Fair. Resonance 104.4fm will be transmitting all the Frieze Talks, specially commissioned radio art projects and features with artists and art professionals in and around the fair. // Frieze Talks

Frieze Talks features leading art world figures, philosophers and critical theorists delivering keynote lectures and debating the prevailing issues in criticism, curating and art production. In 2006, Frieze Talks will run over four days, with three sessions a day. The days are themed: Taste, Performance, Criticality and Architecture & Atmospherics.

Highlights of the 2006 programme include keynote lectures by Liam Gillick, Marina Abramovic and Eyal Weizman; and panelists include Alice Rawsthorn, Darian Leader, Francesco Bonami, Eda Cufer, Tino Sehgal, Surasi Kusolwong, Claire Bishop, Wade Guyton, Jan Verwoert, Susan Hiller and Brian Dillon. // The Cartier Award

The first recipient of The Cartier Award, Mika Rottenberg, showcases a new work at the fair as part of Frieze Commissions.

Rottenberg graduated from Columbia University, New York in 2004. Recent exhibitions include Greater New York, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2005), New Works/New Acquisitions, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2005) and Uncertain States of America, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo (2005). Rottenberg will participate in the 2006 Busan Biennale in South Korea and has a forthcoming solo exhibition at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2006).

Rottenberg's video installations are part of the Guggenheim Museum and The Museum of Modern Art collections, both in New York, as well as the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo. Mika Rottenberg is the first recipient of the Cartier Award and this is her first exhibition in the UK. This major new international award is unique in providing an artist with a commission, the means and space to execute the work and a platform to exhibit it. The Cartier Award gives an artist the chance to present new work at Frieze Art Fair, as well as a residency at Delfina. It also provides the artist with a fee and production support.

/ Frieze Projects: Artists Commissions and Talks 2003 - 2005

A new book documenting the first three years of Frieze Projects’ ambitious curatorial programme will be published to coincide with Frieze Art Fair 2006.

Since the inaugural Frieze Art Fair in 2003, Frieze Projects has invited a selection of emerging and established artists to realize work responding specifically to the fair context. Artists - including Martha Rosler, Lawrence Weiner, Andrea Zittel, Richard Wentworth, Paola Pivi, Liam Gillick, Aleksandra Mir, gelitin and Jeremy Deller - have contributed work ranging from site specific installations to impromptu performances and print publications.

The Frieze Talks programme, also organised by Frieze Projects, has brought such leading cultural figures as Thomas Crow, Zaha Hadid, Jacques Ranciére, Peter York, Linda Nochlin, David Adjaye and Roberta Smith to the podium.

Frieze Projects: Artists Commissions and Talks 2003 - 2005 is the first record of these events, featuring texts from the lectures and panel discussions, and essays on the commissioned projects. This new book serves as a valuable introduction and critical contribution to the most current debates in contemporary art and is illustrated throughout.
