press release

Opening: Tuesday 23 September 2008, 18.00

The Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce and the Goethe-Institut Genoa will be presenting for the first time in Italy, from 24 September to 19 October 2008, 40jahrevideokunst.de, the archive retracing forty years of the history of video art in Germany. The show was established by a research project aimed at the recovery, restoration, conservation and circulation of a wealth of video works produced between 1963 and 2004, in a time-span from the first experimentations of the 1960s to the most recent experiences.

Originating from an initiative of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation), the project is the result of the cooperation of five of the most important centers for contemporary art in Germany: it is produced by K21/ Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen of Düsseldorf and by the ZKM of Karlsruhe, in collaboration with the Kunsthalle of Brema, the Lenbachhaus of Munich and the Museum der bildenden Künste of Leipzig. It is promoted internationally by the Goethe-Institut.

Two years of research and setting-up of standards for restoration and conservation of the original films on digital format led to the selection of fifty-nine works, considered to be among the most important produced in Germany, by artists and authors, such as Marina Abramovic / Ulay, Joseph Beuys, Jan Dibbets, Valie Export, Harun Farocki, Jochen Gerz, Rebecca Horn, Christian Jankowski, Nam June Paik, Gerry Schum, Katharina Sieverding, Rosemarie Trockel, Wolf Vostell, Robert Wilson.
