Art is Science Ⅱ
07.10.2017 - 31.03.2018
Karuizawa New Art Museum

In this summer Karuizawa New Art Museum had the show “Art is Science”, in which we featured artistic expressionism which emerged from the advancement of scientific technology. From the early 20th century to the post-war period, there had been use of scientific technology in artworks as experimental attempts. We now notice that the mutation would influence our esthetic sensibility and contributes to its diversity.

In the current exhibition “Art is ScienceⅡ”, we would like to show ongoingly new horizon, where artists have been working on links with Science in contemporary art.

In 1973 a British-born artist Harold Cohen(1928-2016) invented《AARON》, an automatic drawing machine. Through numerous trial-and-error experiments with his computers Cohen pursued not only artistic expressions generated from human’s drawing and colors but also he sought for creations by Artificial Intelligence which could learn and develop autonomously. John Cage (1912-1992) is well known as an avant-garde composer of experimental music, who presented “Radio Music” (1958) and 'Cartridge Music' (1960) by making use of the capacities of machines such as radios and microphones. We see there had been use of scientific technologies produced continuously to embody imaginations and ideas in conceptual aspects. In this exhibition we are pleased to present a variety of works as the fruits of artists’ unflagging enthusiasm of fresh expressions from the new era, and we hope that the works in this show will sometimes astonish visitors by their novelty and at other times will give us strange feelings, while breaking stereotypical views on our ordinary senses.
