John Cage (born 1912, Los Angeles, d.1992, New York) was an artist, philosopher and a major composer of the 20th century. He created compositions using randomness, manipulated instruments, computers, and tapes, and built theatrical actions into music and gave decisive impetus for action art and happening. Legendary are his 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence. He taught experimental music at the Chicago Institute of Design.
