The presence of Rubens in Genoa coincided with the rise of the grandest season of the local patrician class, mainly made up of bankers, who disposed of extraordinary financial means. Ambition, refined taste and a skilful investment policy contributed to the creation of stunning collections of art, which could even compete with those of the greatest European monarchs. These collections included paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Caravaggio,

Annibale Carracci, Guido Reni, Ribera, Procaccini, Orazio e Artemisia Gentileschi, Frans Floris, Van Dyck and, of course, Rubens, in a masterly combination of artists from the present as well as from the most recent and worthiest past. those of the greatest European monarchs. Sections of the exhibition include the rich picture gallery owned by Gio. Carlo Doria – who was portrayed on horseback by Rubens – together with his "Wunderkammer", the wonder room full of rare and curious objects; the series of Artes Liberales by Frans Floris, which Gerolamo and Gio. Agostino Balbi bought in Antwerp, are especially brought together for the first time since their dispersal; the stunning painting Juno and Argus, painted by Rubens for Stefano Balbi, financier in Milan, and the picture gallery of Gio Filippo Spinola, the first collector in Europe to boast one of Veronese's big Suppers in his gallery.
