JAPAN POP

The first (September 2004–January 2005) exhibition at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm following its modernisation will open at the Tennis Palace in autumn 2005. Japanese comics are currently very popular around the world. Manga is produced separately for girls and boys and there are innumerable sub-genres from historical manga to action comics. Japanese comics are rooted in scroll paintings almost a thousand years old and in the works of the woodblock masters of the Edo period (1603–1867). Produced by the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, the exhibition covers the period from the 18th century to today and shows the similarities between old and new.

The Japan Pop exhibition upstairs displays Japanese contemporary art from the collection of the German collector, Professor Dr. Dr. Thomas Olbricht. Visually, contemporary Japanese art is closely associated with the worlds of manga and anime. The exhibition includes works from the best-known Japanese artists, including Yoshitomo Nara, Mariko Mori and the ‘Andy Warhol of Japan’ Takashi Murakami.
