press release

This is the most comprehensive exhibition to date of the Glasgow-based artist Karla Black and comprises an ambitious series of sculptures made specifically for the upper galleries of Modern Art Oxford.

Black has come to public prominence with her ephemeral floor-based works and remarkable hanging sculptures created from materials that evoke both a sensory recollection of infant learning; powder paint, crushed chalk and sugar paper and those of a distinct feminine association; lipstick, nail varnish and blusher. Embodying a precarious fragility, Black’s twisted and taut forms are as much a reference to Minimal and Conceptual practices of the late 60’s as they are to a classical sculptural tradition.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue co-published with Migros Museum, Zurich, Hamburg Kunstverein and Inverleith House.
