L’UNESCO has designated Turin, in partnership with Rome, the World Book Capital for 2006.

The Foundation for Books, Music, and Culture has conceived and coordinated the numerous initiatives associated with this event. In early May, the Foundation will organize the International Book Fair in Turin, where Castello di Rivoli will have a stand and where its Education Department will participate in the activities. During the period when the Fair is held, visitors there can also obtain reduced-price admission to the Castello.

In conjunction with these events, and within the framework of the initiatives associated with Turin World Book Capital with Rome, the Museum is organizing an exhibition devoted to artists’ books.

The exhibition presents the work of artists such as Joseph Kosuth, Giulio Paolini, Lawrence Weiner, and Hanne Darboven, along with others who, since the 1960s have explored the themes of the book and writing, just as, in subsequent years, Enzo Cucchi, Nicola De Maria, and Ettore Spalletti have created artworks in book form. On the occasion of the exhibition, the artists have been asked to install their works in the designated spaces of the Museum. Enzo Cucchi presents four sculpture/books. Hanne Darboven exhibits examples of a book diary in which, using obscure mathematical codes, she transposes the events of her life. Nicola De Maria presents “casa / house,” a poetic reading space. Joseph Kosuth exhibits his books along with manifestos related to them. The installation of Giulio Paolini is made up of twenty cube-shaped Plexiglas cases of various sizes, each containing a book and together forming a sculpture. Ettore Spalletti exhibits a series of wood tables on which he presents books he has created with Mario Airò, Franz West, Carla Accardi, Massimo Bartolini, Haim Steinbach, and with the poet Anna Castellan. Lawrence Weiner, using his specific mode of conceptual analysis, explores the roots of language. Encounters with artists and literary figures are planned within the context of the exhibition.
