JSC Düsseldorf has launched a new series of exhibitions under the title JSC ON VIEW, which explicitly focuses on works from the JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION. In the first exhibition in this series, the JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION pays tribute to the work of three important female artists who have recently passed away: Lutz Bacher, Barbara Hammer, and Carolee Schneemann.

The presentation occupies the entire ground floor of JSC Düsseldorf and includes major video and film works by the artists as well as Lutz Bacher’s series of large-format photographs, SEX WITH STRANGERS (1986).

All three artists share a direct way of dealing with the topic of sexuality and the accompanying break with the apparatus of an American, male-dominated reality. While Lutz Bacher, who masked her identity behind a male pseudonym, took a deliberately defensive position against the classification of her work in the feminist context, Carolee Schneemann’s performance-based, kinetic painting and experimental practice emphasized the social discourse on corporeality and gender roles. Barbara Hammer, on the other hand, is a pioneer of queer cinema. Hammer’s experimental films break with conventional narrative film, which she considered too limited to re-present lesbian and homosexual realities.

The seven works in this exhibition have never been seen before in this constellation. As in previous exhibitions at JSC Düsseldorf, the permeable architecture in the form of glass walls provides an incomparable view of the works. Differences and similarities of formal aesthetics can be grasped here in a single glance.
