press release

The first exhibition of the spring at Bonniers Konsthall is devoted to film. In the course of ten weeks, five works receive their Swedish premieres in the film programme Projections. The exhibition format enables the presentation of the wide range of moving images in today's contemporary art, spanning everything from a cinematic dream in eight minutes to an hour of a classic documentary. The common denominator of the works is the artists' conviction of culture's unique voice in society. In their films the artists make use of existing works – in music, film and visual art – in order to bring to the fore contemporary and historical events of both a political and an existential nature.

In Nummer zes; Steinway grand piano, wake me up to go to sleep and all the colors of the rainbow, Guido van der Werve recounts the history of the Steinway grand piano, concluding with a performance of Chopin's piano concerto in E minor. For Sculpture Plein-air, Swiecie, Artur Zmijewski invited artists and steel workers to collaborate to create public artworks together. Le Déjeuner en Fourrure /The Lunch in Fur by Ursula Mayer is a staging in which three female icons of the early 20th century meet: Dora Maar, Meret Oppenheim and Josephine Baker. In Attica, Manon de Boer conveys the story of the infamous 1971 hostage drama at the Attica prison through two pieces by composer Frederic Rzewski. Grand Paris Texas by Teresa Hubbard & Alexander Birchler portrays not only Wim Wender´s cult movie Paris, Texas but also the remote town of Paris, its inhabitants and the abandoned cinema Grand.

Running for two weeks each, the films are produced by internationally active artists whose works have not previously been exhibited in Sweden. The selection of works is made by the curators Sara Arrhenius, Camilla Larsson and Caroline Elgh. In our programme of artists' talks, the public will have the opportunity to meet the people behind the films.
