press release

Opening: Friday, March 3, 7 pm

The immersive installations of Sol Calero (born 1982 in Caracas, Venezuela) appear almost like a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art): vibrantly coloured, rich in decorative, but also usable objects and furnished with paintings, furniture, self-designed fabrics, and video installations. Thus Calero transforms neutral into functional and communicative spaces – art galleries become hairdressing saloons or internet cafés, a museum is turned into a wellness area. By using various tropical motif within a lush aesthetic, she challenges our cliché-afflicted concept of the exotic and thereby the construction of identity and nationality.

For Interiores, Sol Calero’s first mayor institutional solo exhibition in Germany, she focuses on painting as a process of abstraction, a new experimental turn in her work. In the tradition of Venezuelan sculptor Jesús Rafael Soto (1923-2005), she transforms the whole space of the Kunstverein into a painting – her painting – in which the audience immerses. Thus, a space without functionality emerges where, nevertheless, the conflicts and contradictions of our value system are exposed and our desires and longings are filled with sensual, distracting and humorous stimuli.
