press release

One of the most revolutionary cultural movements of the twentieth century, Surrealism still exerts a strong appeal today, more than fifty years after its heyday. This exhibition of over 100 paintings, sculptures and works on paper focuses on the manifestations of Surrealism in America from about 1930 to 1950, in New York as well as other cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and Chicago. Included are works by Americans -- Joseph Cornell, Kay Sage, Dorothea Tanning, Peter Blume, Arshile Gorky, Alexander Calder, and Jackson Pollock-- as well as European artists who were in exile in the United States during World War II, such as Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Andre Masson. This is the first major museum exhibition devoted to American Surrealism since 1977. Many unknown works have surfaced since then, which bear witness to the importance of the movement in the USA.
