The Deluded Eye. Five Centuries of Deception. Welcome to an exhibition where every work on show was created to cheat and deceive. But not to humiliate or deride. On the contrary. The role of these delusional works is to surprise and playfully erase the border between fiction and reality. Giving paintings a third dimension with the express purpose of luring the eye has been popular with artists since antiquity. Often it served as a means for artists to demonstrate their skills to the rest of the world. But it wasn't until the 19th century France that the technique was officially named. The umbrella term trompe l'œil literally means to "deceive or trick the eye". This exhibition shows a selection of trompe l'œil works side by side, some old, some new. More than 150 paintings, craft items, digital installations and videos have been brought together to create the first and largest exhibition of its kind in Sweden. The works of art are a blend of masters past and present, traditional and experimental. Rembrandt, Christian Andersson, Pere Borell del Caso, Fredrik Wretman, Samuel van Hoogstraten, Lotta Hannerz, René Magritte, Olafur Eliasson, Anish kapoor, Jean Baptiste Oudry, Louis-Leopolde Bouilly, Cornelius Gijsbrechts and Miriam Bäckström are just a few of the names representing the generations of artists on show here.
