Torn Between Two Lovers

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Torn Between Two Lovers, curated by Katharina Fritsch, the next exhibition in his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street.

The fourth in a series of artist-curated summer exhibitions at Matthew Marks Gallery, this exhibition seeks to explore the space between painting and photography and will include work by Peter Josef Abels, Hans Brandli and Pia Fries, Andreas Gursky, Birgit Jensen, Herbert Koller, Alexej Koschkarow, Michael van Oven, Sigmar Polke, Gerhardt Richter, Thomas Ruff, Christoph Steinmeyer, as well as Fritsch herself.

Katharina Fritsch has brought together the work of these thirteen artists to investigate the way in which painting and photography inform each other through a variety of media, including silkscreens, lithographs, and photographs printed in a variety of techniques. Fritsch has said, “without becoming nostalgic for the painting of the eighties, I think that now, through photography, which was so strong in the nineties, painting has become possible again.”

Photographs of paintings include Gursky’s untitled photograph of an 1889 Van Gogh entitled Wheat Field behind Saint-Paul Hospital with a Reaper and a photograph by Michael van Oven of one of his own painted portraits on canvas. Silkscreens include one of Katharina Fritsch’s large-scale prints of everyday tourist postcards and Thomas Ruff’s Anderes Porträt, a black and white print made from a composite photograph of two faces, produced with a special police camera used to construct a potential suspect’s image. Photographs onto which paint has been applied include a hand-painted image from Gerhard Richter’s Sils series and a hand-colored gelatin silver print by Sigmar Polke.

Fritsch represented Germany in the 1995 Venice Biennale, and the following year the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art organized a major exhibition of her work. Recent exhibitions include a retrospective at the Tate Modern, which traveled to the K21 Kunstsammlung im Ständehaus, Düsseldorf, and an installation at the Shirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt. This year, her work will be included in the Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art and an exhibition at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden.

Torn Between Two Lovers will be on view at Matthew Marks Gallery, 522 West 22nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues), through August 15th, 2003. Hours: Monday through Friday, 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
