Art of Tomorrow

This is the first exhibition dedicated to Hilla Rebay (1890–1967), one of the founders of the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, the forerunner of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. She was its first curator, director, and educator until 1952, as well as an accomplished artist. Rebay embraced non-objectivity—or non-representation—in art as both a style and aesthetic philosophy.

The exhibition will trace Rebay's artistic career and will include her early abstract watercolors, drawings, abstract and figurative collages, and large-scale non-objective paintings. Also on view will be early masterpieces by her artist colleagues and friends Jean Arp, Rudolf Bauer, Vasily Kandinsky, Hans Richter, and Kurt Schwitters, among others.

The exhibition will also reflect the extraordinary collaboration between Rebay and Solomon R. Guggenheim, which resulted in one of the world's finest collections of early twentieth century modernism. This accomplishment was expressed above all through Art of Tomorrow, the opening exhibition at the Museum of Non-Objective Painting that introduced Guggenheim's collection for the first time to a New York audience in 1939. The present exhibition will re-create in part this event and will include not only important works by the artists cited above, but also striking canvases by John Ferren, Juan Grís, Ben Nicholson, Pablo Picasso, Rolph Scarlett, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart, and Jean Xceron, thus attesting to the prescience of its founders and the historical importance of the collection today. The exhibition is organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in collaboration with Museum Villa Stuck, Munich and Schlossmuseum, Murnau and travels to Germany after its New York presentation.
