The Joan Miró Foundation will be presenting an exhibition selected by Gloria Moure of some 100 works produced between 1966 and 1975, a period during which the profound crisis that occurred on all levels was particularly felt in the world of culture and brought about changes in the visual arts that had a decisive effect on the development of the art of our times.

The works by 39 leading international artists demonstrate the transformation of art that took place at the end of the 1960s, when artists crossed the strict boundaries between the classic disciplines (painting, sculpture, etc.) and began using new means of expression. The exhibition is designed as a grouping of small individual shows that try to maintain the appearance they had when first presented, using materials from the period.

The twelve issues of the review Interfunktionen, published between 1968 and 1975 establish a chronological framework for the exhibition, in the same way as the artists taking part in it have determined the selection of the works on show, all of them from the same period but not necessarily included in the magazine.

Set up in 1968 as a form of protest by the artists who were far removed from the historical avant-gardes and had been rejected by that year’s Documenta, the review was certainly an important vehicle for the propagation of ideas based on a European vision and as a meeting point between artists in Europe and the United States, independent of the dominant movements of the time. It contained contributions of a theoretical and practical nature, with the "direct" intervention of the artists, who defined and illustrated their particular strategies. In line with this spirit, many of them have actively participated in the selection of the pieces for this exhibition.

Interfunktionen, as its name indicates, was an interdisciplinary publication with no restrictions as to media and open to all artistic genres. The show will thus include works on a wide variety of supports and will extend the exhibition space beyond the Foundation itself to television, freebie newspapers and local cinemas.

The aim is to document a fundamental period in Western culture during which many of the motivations and concerns that are still present in today’s art were established.
