British Art Show 7

A new programme of events held as part of the build up to one of the UK’s most ambitious touring art exhibitions kicks off in earnest this week.

‘Constellation’ is being brought to the City by members of the Plymouth Visual Arts Consortium – a partnership between Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Peninsula Arts University of Plymouth, Plymouth Arts Centre, Plymouth College of Art, i-DAT, KURATOR, Groundwork Trust and the Architecture Centre for Devon and Cornwall.

The programme features a series of events based on or inspired by contemporary art. The events will take place at regular intervals over the next few months as the City builds up to the opening of ‘British Art Show 7: In the Days of the Comet’

The exhibition, which showcases the biggest and best of current British contemporary art, will be on display from 17 September to 4 December 2011 across five venues including Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Peninsula Arts Gallery, Plymouth Arts Centre and the Plymouth College of Art Gallery. Plymouth is one of only three locations outside London selected by the Hayward Gallery to host this prestigious exhibition, which will be supported by Plymouth City Council and Arts Council England.

‘Constellation’ programme events will continue right up until the opening of the 'British Art Show'. These will include more ‘Art Bites’, Future Visions Week, artist talks and professional development activities.

“There are so many things happening in the City that highlight the importance and varied nature of contemporary art,” says Paula Orrell, Curator at Plymouth Arts Centre. “The ‘British Art Show’ is a massive coup for Plymouth and we are keen to engage as many people as possible with it. The aim of the ‘Constellation’ programme is to familiarise people with this kind of art practice, inform and inspire them in the hope that they can really get the most out of the exhibition when it’s on display.”

The British Art Show will feature works by 39 different artists all of whom have been chosen by curators Lisa Le Feuvre and Tom Morton. Works on display will include painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, video, film and performance.
