Holbein to Hockney

The Royal Library at Windsor Castle holds one of the world's greatest collections of works on paper. Since the 15th century, drawings have been collected by those who appreciate the spontaneity of the sketch and the ability to see every trace of the artist's hand across the centuries. The 75 examples selected for the exhibition represent each important group of material in the Royal Collection, reflecting the personal tastes of those monarchs who commissioned or acquired them over 500 years. They range from observations from nature, compositional studies for paintings and portrait sketches, as well as finished works of art in their own right. Among the artists represented are Dürer, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, Ruisdael, Poussin, Claude, Canaletto and Merian. Pressetext
