Giacometti to Judd - Prints by Sculptors

An exhibition of some 60 works selected from the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art explores how sculptors often have an affinity for the tactile aspects of printmaking. Meant to provide a context for the adjacent installation New Concepts in Printmaking 2: Willie Cole, this exhibition focuses on prints made by artists who are best known as sculptors. Most, including Hans Arp, Henry Moore, and Claes Oldenburg, have used printmaking to investigate, on a more intimate scale, some of the same aesthetic and spatial concerns that they explore in their sculpture.

Louise Bourgeois, Alberto Giacometti, and Wilhelm Lehmbruck were especially drawn to engraving and drypoint, techniques that involve scratching an image into metal with a burin or needle. Donald Judd, Martin Puryear, and Joel Shapiro, all of whom have created sculpture in wood, have similarly found the woodcut technique to be particularly amenable. Still other sculptors, including Christo, Richard Long, and Richard Serra, have devised various innovative means to introduce unusual surfaces or three-dimensional qualities to their prints.
