press release

The Figurative Impulse: Works from the UBS Art Collection will be on view in the Bertita and Guillermo L. Martínez Gallery and the Santander Gallery beginning Saturday, September 24, 2005 through Sunday, January 8, 2006.

The Figurative Impulse: Works from the UBS Art Collection brings together a diverse selection of 53 works that focus on one of the most enduring themes in the history of art — the human figure. In addition to the emphasis on representations of the figure, the exhibition includes numerous portraits that explore this traditional genre while expanding its formal and conceptual parameters.

Drawn from The UBS Art Collection, the exhibition includes drawings, paintings, photographs, mixed-media works, and sculpture by 33 prominent international artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Chuck Close, Lucian Freud, Sigmar Polke, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol, John Currin, Cindy Sherman, Raymond Pettibon, Thomas Ruff, and Sam Taylor-Wood. Collectively these artists reflect the diverse aesthetic, stylistic, and conceptual approaches to this rich subject, while virtually illustrating the gamut of artistic practices that have developed over the course of the mid-twentieth century through the present.
