The City Gallery Prague is introducing to the public a collection of forty-five selected graphic works of the 1980s under the name "Hot Needle". This collection, which will significantly expand the galleryęs own graphic collection, was donated by Zdenek Felix, the former director of the Deichtorhallen exhibition center in Hamburg.
The art association Kunstring Folkwang in the West German town of Essen published for its members from 1982 to 1992 annual editions of contemporary graphic art and photography. Seven of the editions were dedicated to the graphic works of young artists from Europe and America belonging to the generation born around 1950. The profile of this generation had been forming since the end of the 1970s and its distinct feature was a diversion from minimal and conceptual art and from technical instruments of photography and video, and an inclination towards seemingly traditional forms of figurative painting and sculpture. This generation was especially interested in subjective and often expressively conceived image language that likes to use cryptic signs and symbols.
The collection of the graphic works from Essen visually documents this situation. As opposed to commonly issued loose graphics, the Kunstring editions are conceived as a thematic unit consisting of four to six works. The goal of this conception was to stress timely aspects of contemporary art discourse and to introduce groups of works related by common opinion, medium, or allied theme. Individual artists were asked to collaborate on these editions regardless whether they had worked with graphics systematically or only randomly. Participating in the editions became the starting point of a new experiment for some of the invited artists. The prints, done with various techniques, were specifically made for individual editions. The artists, men and women, that contributed to the editions came from Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Switzerland, France, and the United States. Many of these artists belong today among internationally appreciated art representatives of the last twenty years of the last century. The works of these artists have not been present in Czech collections until today. Their inclusion in the collections of the City Gallery Prague is therefore even more significant.
