Edgar Degas (Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, b. 1834, Paris; d. 1917, Paris) was a painter and sculptor. In 1874 he and fellow artists organized exhibitions to break the monopoly of the Paris Salon, later known as Impressionist exhibitions. In 1886 he distanced himself more and more from the Impressionist group and developed an independent own painting.
