Henri Matisse (b. 1869, Le Cateau-Cambrésis/France, d. 1954, Cimiez/France) is one of the most important artists of classical modernism. The friendship with the younger Pablo Picasso until his death was characterized by mutual respect, admiration and rivalry. His intensive examination of certain themes found expression in the countless paintings and drawings of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire near Aix-en-Provence. Matisse studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and at the École des Beaux-Arts under Gustave Moreau.
